Phase-out of UNECE R44
From 1 September 2023, no more seats may be produced under UNECE R44. This marks the start of the sell-off period, and from 1 September 2024, seats certified under UNECE R44 can no longer be sold. In short, both R44 and R129 regulations are currently running in parallel, but R44 is being phased out.
UNECE R129
UNECE R129 is divided into several phases. The latest amendment, Supplement 3 (R129-03), was published at the end of 2022.
• R129-01 (first phase) introduced many changes for seats designed for children up to 100cm tall, especially side-impact testing with new test dummies (Q-Dummies).
• R129-02 added requirements for children taller than 100cm, mainly affecting booster seats.
• R129-03 introduced requirements for booster seats with belt guides (see also https://www.unece.org/).
Phases of R129 (i-Size)
Regulation 129 is currently divided into three phases:
• Phase 1: 45-105 cm
• Phase 2: 100 to 150 cm
• Phase 3: 125 to 150 cm
Where does the term i-Size come from?
The original standard "R129" was marketed by Maxi Cosi as "i-Size." The term quickly caught on, so nowadays the standard is more commonly known as i-Size.
